Bandwidth Control & Path Selection

Optimal Traffic Control for Network and Business Flexibility

Not all network traffic situations are the same and not all applications require the same resources. Treating them in the same way can cause even more congestion and ultimately lead to an unsatisfactory user experience.

Network traffic control is necessary to optimize business operations by ensuring that business-critical traffic flows reliably.

Open Systems Bandwidth Control ensures that important applications still perform well 24×7 worldwide, even if WAN links are congested. Path Selection optimizes how traffic gets from one point to another when multiple paths over different connectivity circuits are available.

An aerial view of a complex highway interchange at night reveals illuminated roads forming intersecting curves and loops, symbolizing last-mile connectivity. Blurred vehicle lights create streaks, highlighting traffic flow, while the faint outlines of the urban landscape surround the scene.

Components

Connectivity Profiles

To ensure that the network reacts faster to business needs, connectivity circuits are grouped into profiles according to bandwidth, type of link, or link behavior.

Traffic Priority Classes

To make room for business-critical application traffic, each profile is split into different priority classes, and their maximum and minimum bandwidth is configured.

Policies

Routing policies define which traffic takes which path, and what happens when a path is no longer usable or congested. The same policies can be applied to multiple locations.

How It Works

Employing bandwidth control and path selection services, you can see network traffic usage – including encrypted traffic – by application, which then allows you to control how your available bandwidth is consumed and set policies to route and prioritize traffic according to your needs.

There are tools and metrics to exercise control over bandwidth usage by application, location, and connection, enabling you to optimize performance across your entire organization.

Also, you can route every application over an optimal path, and define per-app orders of preference in the event connections drop or are degraded.

A hierarchical diagram illustrates SD-Wan Routing traffic priorities. Users (low, medium, high) access services: high priority for Skype, SAP, Azure; medium for Office 365, Confluence; low for YouTube, Facebook, Google. Different ISPs and MPLS manage the connection.
